Considered the ‘King of fruits’ in Southeast Asia, the durian is a native of the Borneo rainforest. The name durian is derived from the Malay duri meaning thorns. Durians usually weigh between two and three kilos and ripens in three to four months. The fruit is nutritious, it has a high iron content and contains large quantities of vitamins B,C, and E. Man is not alone in his appreciation of the durian, many forest dwelling mammals will wait for the fruit to ripen and fall, particularly elephants.
