Description:
Once a typical scene in Singapore's Chinatown, these itinerant hawkers began at daybreak, moving about discreetly in the still, almost deserted streets, quietly setting down their double load to serve an early morning customer, or to fan the little fire under the cooking pot. Note the old gas lamp-post which looks somewhat out of place amidst the lantern shop-signs and general Chinoiserie. The Singapore Gas Company had pushed to have gas mains laid in the principal streets in order for the first gas lamps to light the streets of Singapore on Queen Victoria's birthday, 24th May, 1864. The lamps greatly fascinated the natives who could not understand how it was possible that fire could come out at the top without the posts getting hot.
