Description:
Taken from Mount Palmer, this view looks across the first phase of the Telok Ayer reclamation. The spoil for the project came from Mount Wallich, a hill which stood at the junction of Wallich Street  and Maxwell Road. Completed in 1887, the reclamation extended the shoreline from Telok Ayer Street to Raffles Quay, adding an extra 18 acres of land on which new access roads were laid out. Among these is Cecil Street which cuts a newly laid pristine line to the left. Robinson Road later followed the approximate line of the sea wall. The sea area in the foreground was reclaimed much later in the second phase, 1907-14, which paved the way for Shenton Way.
