Description:
This view looks down Malacca Street towards Pearl's Hill, so named after Captain James Pearl who captained the vessel which brought Raffles to Singapore in 1819. Pearl settled in Singapore in 1821, and built himself a house on the hill where he had his plantation and which still bears his name. Note the jinrikshas both parked and in use along the street. This Japanese invention was imported from Shanghai in 1880, and provided a source of income, albeit it very hard earned, for the many of the immigrant Chinese coolies. They became immediately very popular, although not with the gharry drivers who did not welcome the cheaper competition.
