New Bridge Road was laid out by the Irish architect George D. Coleman in 1842. The new bridge alluded to is Coleman Bridge, built in 1840, also by its namesake, which linked new Bridge Road with Hill Street. It was the second bridge built in Singapore, thus it acquired the local names, Second Drawbridge or New Bridge. The Chinese called it Sin Pat Ma Chu Cheng - Front of New Market, or Ji Ma Lo - Number Two Horse Way. Today, considerably widened, New Bridge Road remains a busy thoroughfare in China Town.
