Description:
This view of the Indian Muslim and Hindu places of worship on South Bridge Road was taken after the introduction of the electric tram which operated here from 1905 to 1927. Located in the heart of China Town, the sites of these religious buildings undoubtedly inspired the names of the adjacent Mosque, Pagoda and Temple streets. Jamae Mosque has occupied this site since 1826-7, and in its present form since 1830-35. The Sri Mariamman Temple, built 1843, is the oldest and most important Hindu temple in Singapore.
