The steam era greatly accelerated Singapore's growth as an important centre of trade in the second half of the 19th century. Her location on the busy route between China and India made her one of the world's most important coaling stations, particularly after the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869. Mail which had formerly sailed the circuitous route round the Cape, subsequently arrived speedily and more frequently via Suez on regular steamers of various lines, such as the German steamer in this view. The Borneo Company Ltd was the first to establish itself at New (Keppel) Harbour, where it built the wharves, pictured in this view, at Tanjong Pagar.
