The early travelling salesman, this Chinese hawker of indeterminable goods carried his wares from place to place suspended from either end of a pole across his shoulders. By the 1860s many street hawkers, both licensed and unlicensed walked the streets of Singapore, more often than not bare foot. John Cameron, editor of the Straits Times, observed that “There is probably no city in the world with such a motley crowd of itinerant vendors of wares ...” The large influx of Chinese immigrants led many to turn to street hawking to earn a living with little capital outlay or skills required.
